STEPS TO ADDRESS BEFORE THE LAST BUSINESS DAY IN DECEMBER
Start the process by confirming the newly purchased property is showing in your name vs the prior owner. Hendricks County gives you the ability to search for exemptions that exist online here. If the property is not showing in your name then this typically will require a call to the auditor’s office (see offices tab)
Since you live in Hendricks County you can complete the application online using their File E-Forms, or you can complete it in person. The Auditor’s Real Estate office is open from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., Monday through Friday.
NOTE: You can view the holiday closings for Hendricks County offices here.

Submiting The Homestead Deduction/Credit
Homestead Exemptions: Complete & Submit Homestead Deduction/Credit online here. Once You find/Select your property, scroll down about 1/2 way and use the "File E-Form Blue Button” and then check the Homestead box to fill out and submit the form.
Remember that taxes paid this year are actually for the prior year and taxes that relate to this year will actually be paid next year.
If you bought an existing home and the seller had a homestead exemption in place as of March 1, in the year you bought it, then the exemption should AUTOMATICALLY carry forward and be a deduction for this year’s taxes, payable next year.
To play it safe be sure to file for the exemption no later than the last business day in December.
Before completing the form please print out a copy for your records.
